Society for Hawaiian Archaeology

In October 2006, SLIM supported Society for Hawaiian Archaeology, 2006 Annual Conference, “Public Archaeology,” at UH-MCC (http://maui.hawaii.edu/sha/). This regional conference provided an unprecedented opportunity for students and scholars to engage in dialogue about the public role of archaeology as it pertains to cultural-environmental sustainability. A number of highly distinguished scholars were in attendance including the Keynote Speaker, Dr. Patrick Kirch Director of the Oceanic Archaeology Laboratory, at University of California, Berkeley, and Special Guest Speaker Dr. Janet Monge from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. During the event, SLIM connected interested students, academics, and cultural resource management professionals with the pubic in order to facilitate the creation of non-traditional networks. In order to provide an avenue for the exchange of ideas between burgeoning and established scholars, SLIM support also went to fund inter-island travel for six UH undergraduates majoring in Anthropology; of the six students to receive SLIM funding, three are native Hawaiian.
