Islands of the World

In July 2006, SLIM provided support for the International Small Island Studies Association’s (ISISA) Islands of the World IX Conference. Hosted by UH-MCC, the theme of this past summer’s conference was “ Sustainable Islands – Sustainable Strategies.” Scholars and experts from islands around the world came to Maui to discuss and disseminate knowledge about a range of sustainable practices and initiatives. This international conference provided excellent networking opportunities between various educational, private, and public institutions within Maui and beyond; in exchange for SLIM’s generous support, the SLIM logo was prominently displayed on a range of conference materials. Via SLIM’s participation, the conference recruited interest in and widened the recognition of SLIM as an emerging knowledge center (cf. The Maui Declaration). Additionally, County of Maui and USGS support resulted in a conference balance of resources that will be applied to future conferences focusing on sustainability.
